The Orthodox Jewish Feminine Divide. Performance, Technology, and the Artist in North America

Description:

This talk explores the trajectory of the musical feminine divide in Hasidic and Yeshivish/Litivish circles from its development to its current transformation. Informed by the norms of modesty (tziniut), women and girls act, sing, and dance in an exclusive feminine private space, creating a division with the masculine performative spaces. Whereas performance is not new for Orthodox Jewish women, their newfound access to music production thanks to the β€œdigital turn” has transformed how women and girls create and disseminate their music.
