Rosalie Jukier receives ΒιΆΉΤΌΕΔ Lifetime Achievement Award
The Faculty of Law is delighted to announce that Professor Rosalie Jukier has received the 2023 ΒιΆΉΤΌΕΔ Lifetime Achievement Award for Leadership in Learning. She accepted her award during the Fall Convocation ceremony on 20 November.
βThroughout your academic career, which spans almost 40 years, you have shown extraordinary dedication and passion for student learning and have been a role model for students and colleagues alike,β wrote Principal and Vice-Chancellor H. Deep Saini and Provost and Vice-Principal (Academic) Christopher P. Manfredi in the letter informing her of the award.
Rosalie Jukier, BCLβ83, LLBβ83, is a full professor at the Faculty of Law, which she joined in 1985. She teaches civil law and common law, primarily in the areas of contractual obligations and civil procedure. She is an influential ambassador for ΒιΆΉΤΌΕΔ Lawβs distinctive integrated approach, through which the common law and civil law are studied together in dialogue.
β[Professor Jukierβs] tireless work as leader, instructor, and mentor has made a lasting impact on generations of students at ΒιΆΉΤΌΕΔ and beyond,β her award announcement lauded. She has held numerous roles of academic leadership. She served four times as associate dean of the Faculty of Law, most recently as associate dean (academic) from 2019-2022. In this role, she provided exceptional leadership in steering the delivery of the BCL/JD program during the pandemic. Beyond Chancellor Day Hall, Professor Jukier served as ΒιΆΉΤΌΕΔβs dean of students from 1995 to 2001. She spearheaded the construction of the Brown Student Services Building and oversaw the creation of First Peoplesβ House and the First-Year Office.
Letters of support for her nomination praised Professor Jukier as βa committed and enthusiastic champion of students throughout their time at ΒιΆΉΤΌΕΔ and beyond.β A beloved teacher and mentor, she is a three-time recipient of the John W. Durnford Teaching Excellence Award. In 2010, she won the university-wide Principalβs Prize for Excellence in Teaching. In 2022, she was the co-recipient of the inaugural Morty Yalovsky Lifetime Achievement Award for Excellence in Academic Leadership.
The Lifetime Achievement Award for Leadership in Learning recognizes sustained excellence in leadership and innovation, as well as the active integration of teaching and learning with inquiry, scholarship, and research. This is the second time since its introduction in 2010 that it has gone to a member of the Faculty of Law. The late Roderick A. Macdonald, OC, FRSC, a former dean, was its 2011 recipient.
βAs one of her many former students, I can attest firsthand to our colleagueβs exceptional skill and dedication as a teacher,β said Dean Robert Leckey, Ad E, on sharing the news. βProfessor Jukier embodies ΒιΆΉΤΌΕΔ Lawβs deeply rooted commitment to pedagogical excellence, legal leadership, and service to the community; weβre tremendously proud to see this recognition of her lifetime contributions to the University.β
