Celebrating 100 plus 1

Eminent neuroscientist Brenda Milner has birthday party at The Neuro

The Neuro held a birthday celebration today for neuroscientist Dr. Brenda Milner, who turned 101 years old on July 15, 2019. Faculty, staff, and students filled the Jeanne Timmins Auditorium to hear some words of congratulations from Â鶹ԼÅÄ’s Dean of Medicine, Dr. David Eidelman and ancedotes from Dr. Michael Petrides, one of Dr. Milner's former trainees.

The crowd then sang happy birthday to Milner and had some cake, a tradition that started when she turned 90 in 2008. It is a relatively quiet birthday for Milner compared to last year, her 100th, when The Neuro held the in her honour. The two-day symposium ended with a gala dinner attended by the Governor General of Canada, Julie Payette.

Milner is Canada’s preeminent neuropsychologist, having pioneered research into the human brain; many consider her a founder of the field of clinical neuropsychology and cognitive neuroscience. She is the Dorothy J. Killam Professor at The Neuro, and a professor in the Department of Neurology and Neurosurgery. Her contributions revolutionized our understanding of how brain structures govern different learning, memory, and speech functions, and she has received numerous major awards and honours.
