Why does SKILLSETS charge a No Show fee?

Attendance at SKILLSETS events is free for all ΒιΆΉΤΌΕΔ graduate students and postdocs; however, registering for any event is a commitment to attend. Consequences of being a β€œno show” include possibly blocking other students from attending. Additionally, facilitators spend time designing appropriate activities for the size of the group, customizing content for different attendee groups, and adapting their sessions to online delivery modes. Efficient use of resources allows us to offer a broad range of events with no charge. No Shows compromise our ability to facilitate a viable program.

What constitutes a No Show?

Students who registered for an event and are absent without notice received by the SKILLSETS team 48 hours before the event are subject to a No Show fee (see below for the cancellation process). Additionally, students who arrive more than 15 minutes late to a session will be charged a No Show fee.

How much is the No Show fee, and how will it be charged?

The amount of no-show fee depends on the event. Many of our regular workshops do not have a no-show fee. Events that are more costly to organize (e.g. Would You Fund It) generally have a $25 no-show fee that is charged for each unexcused absence from a SKILLSETS session. Larger events (e.g. day-long events, as well as events involving extra costs for external speakers and/or catering) will have a higher no-show fee (usually $50) -this will be clearly communicated when it is applied. Please note that certain events (e.g. AGSEM Teaching Assistant Training, Learning to Teach Day) include multiple sessions, and in such cases, the $25 fee is applied per session missed. The No Show fee will be applied to the student's ΒιΆΉΤΌΕΔ account within eight weeks of the session that was not attended.

How do I cancel my registration and avoid the No Show fee?

If you cannot attend an event for which you have registered, you must cancel your registration at least 48 hours before the session.β€―β€― To cancel, please fill in the Cancellation Form. Exceptions to this process will be made only for students in emergency situations (e.g. serious illness, family crisis, etc.), and will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis. For emergency cancellation within 48 hours of the event, please email us directly atβ€―.β€― In the case of unforeseen circumstances or an emergency, SKILLSETS reserves the right to cancel events. Furthermore, SKILLSETS may cancel a session if the number of registrants for an event does not meet the threshold set by the facilitator. In the event of a cancellation, registrants will receive notice of the cancellation as soon as possible, via the email account the student entered during the registration process. Students will not be charged no show fees if the session is cancelled by SKILLSETS.

I wish to appeal a No Show fee. How do I proceed?

You will receive an email indicating that you are going to be charged a No Show fee within a week of the event. If you disagree with the fee, you can appeal within one week of receipt of the email indicating that you will be charged the fee by contacting us at skillsets [at] mcgill.ca. We will do our best to resolve the issue as quickly as possible; in order to expedite the process, please provide copies of any supporting documentation (e.g. copies of email messages) before you initiate the appeal process.
